Description:

At the heart of First Sound are a series of hand-sculpted acoustic percussion instruments, each crafted from clay, aluminum, rice, and other elemental materials. These instruments are not tools of rhythm, they are singular sonic sculptures, each made to emulate a specific voice from the natural world: the rumble of tectonic movement, the whisper of wind through reeds, the percussive rhythm of rainfall, the low hum of underground water, the resonance of shifting stone. They are acoustic embodiments of geophonic forces—earth’s frequencies translated into tangible form.

The performance combines live mezzo-soprano voice, mechanical drones, and field recordings with these sculptural instruments to create a soundscape that is both intimate and planetary. Entirely improvised following a premeditated framework, each iteration becomes a ritual of listening and response, a sonic offering that evokes rivers, seismic shifts, and ancestral murmurs.
